Between July and October 2009, Keep Australia Working Forums were held in Priority Employment Areas across Australia. These areas were identified as being hit particularly hard by the economic downturn. This was due to a range of factors including location, industry composition, demographic profile and economic performance.
Keep Australia Working Forums have provided a unique opportunity to bring together business and community leaders, local governments, employers, training and Job Services Australia providers to discuss how to:
- maximise the impact of the stimulus package;
- support existing jobs and industry;
- promote new opportunities, new industry and new skills; and
- identify what new skills need to be developed.
A valuable part of the forums was the participation of Local Jobs Champions Lindsay Fox and Bill Kelty. They ran workshops where participants identified their skill and labour needs and discussed solutions to local employment problems.
The forums were the first stage in the process of developing regional employment plans. Local Employment Coordinators will now feed the ideas and opportunities identified at the forums into these plans. This is important work that will help guide the Government’s local response to the impact of the global recession.
