If you are looking for a great way to get skills while you work, you may want to do an Australian Apprenticeship. You will work while you do your apprenticeship so you get to learn on the job and also receive formal training in the relevant field, as agreed with your employer through a Training Contract. This contract details the legal obligations for both you and your employer during your Australian Apprenticeship.
Australian Apprenticeships are available to anyone of working age, regardless of your level of education, and can be completed full-time, part-time, or while you are still at school. Apprenticeships are available in a variety of qualification levels in more than 500 occupations, in traditional trades as well as emerging careers. Between 1 December 2009 and 28 February 2010, the Australian Government will provide a $3,350 Apprentice Kickstart Bonus to employers who take on a young person aged 19 years and under into a traditional trade Australian Apprenticeship. The introduction of the Apprentice Kickstart Bonus represents a tripling of Government support for employers of eligible Australian Apprentices in their first year of an Australian Apprenticeship.

The Australian Apprenticeships Access Program (the Access Program) can help you get skilled employment by giving you pre-vocational training, support and assistance to obtain and finish an Australian Apprenticeship, or to enter other employment or further education and training. It is provided for free to participants. Access Program brokers and providers work closely with local employers to deliver training that meets the needs of local industry. You can be referred to the Access Program by Centrelink or by your Job Services Australia provider. Centrelink’s Financial Information Service (FIS) is a free and independent service available to anyone. You can book into a FIS Seminar or you can make an appointment for an interview with a FIS Officer. You can also attend a FIS Seminar at a Centrelink Jobs Expo.
What can FIS do for you and your family?
FIS Officers can provide you with expert information in a friendly environment so that you are better able to:
- recognise and follow your financial options, and make better financial decisions
- understand investment products and how they work
- approach/undertake your own financial planning
- recognise when you might need professional financial advice, and how to go about getting it, and
- understand social security payments and requirements and taxation provisions and requirements and how they may affect you.

From 1 March 2010, Disability Employment Services will be delivered by a network of organisations around Australia. Disability Employment Services providers will work with you to develop an individual program that focuses on your strengths and abilities; and the barriers you face in getting a job. If you are a student with disability then the Disability Support Program provides funding to eligible higher education providers to assist in removing barriers to access for you. The program has three components:
- Additional Support for Students with Disabilities (ASSD);
- The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET); and
- Performance-based Disability Support Funding.

If you are an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary student, the Indigenous Cadetship Support (ICS) links you up with employers through a cadetship arrangement involving full-time study and work placements. It is part of the Australian Government's Indigenous Employment Program (IEP) which aims to generate more employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians. If you are a job seeker with disability and other barriers to employment, the Job Capacity Assessment (JCA) program can give you work capacity assessment for income support and referral to employment and support services.
Job Capacity Assessors are employed by 18 JCA service providers around Australia. Assessors are allied health professionals, such as registered psychologists and rehabilitation counsellors. They can refer you to appropriate employment and support services and Centrelink uses their reports to make decisions about income support and participation requirements. National Green Jobs Corps will provide you with accredited training and work experience opportunities in emerging green and climate change related industries. The Productive Ageing Package aims to harness the skills and experiences of older Australians through provisions of training and support for mature age workers and job seekers. It will support those mature age workers who wish to remain in the workforce and support skills transfer to younger workers.
